In Short

  • Former players like Ricky Ponting and Mark Waugh had predicted 4-0 series win for Australia
  • India gave a befitting reply to the critics by beat Australia for the 1st time in Brisbane in 32 years
  • This is the 2nd time India have retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia after 2-1 series win

Team India gave a fitting reply to all of those cricket experts who counted them out by winning the four-match Test series in Australia in Brisbane on Tuesday.

India pulled off the highest successful run chase at the Gabba to beat Australia by 3 wickets on the final day of the series-deciding Test. This was India's first ever win at this venue and Australia's first defeat in 32 years at the Gabba.

Former cricketers like Michael Clarke, Ricky Ponting, Michael Vaughan, Mark Waugh and Brad Haddin will be biting their own tongues now as a depleted Indian side retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the second time on Australian soil after 2018-19.

Ponting and Waugh had predicted a possible whitewash by Australia after their thumping win in Adelaide while Vaughan had said that India will get hammered by the hosts in the absence of 8 of their key players including captain Virat Kohli, who returned home to Mumbai for his paternity leave after the series-opening Pink-ball Test in December last year.

But India, who played with its most inexperienced bowling lineup sine 1932, defied all odds and answered the critics by winning the Boxing Day Test and in Brisbane to register back-to-back series wins in Australia.

India's stunning win triggered a social media frenzy as fans took to twitter to give their reply to the cricket pundits who gave the visitors absolutely no chance of winning in Australia again.

Fans came up with some epic replies on a particular picture which is going viral on social media with Clarke, Ponting, Vaughan, Waugh and Haddin's predictions for the series.

India had lost Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Hanuma Vihari to injuries during the series while Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were ruled out even before the team reached Australia.

But nothing fazed the visitors as they kept fighting back each time they were staring down the barrel with young players like Mohammed Siraj, Rishabh Pant, Shardul Thakur, T Natarajan and Shubman Gill standing up to the challenge thrown at them to help India stun the Aussies in their own den once again.

The win also kept Ajinkya Rahane's captaincy record intact. Rahane, who stepped into Kohli's shoes after the first Test, has now won 4 out of the 5 matches he has led in so far.
