India captain Virat Kohli has congratulated his teammates on their remarkable series win over Australia after they pulled off a thrilling, record-breaking run chase at the Gabba.

The injury-hit tourists needed 328 runs to win on the final day – 92 more than the previous highest run chase set all the way back in 1951 – and gave a magnificent display as Rishabh Pant’s unbeaten 89 guided India home with just a few deliveries remaining.

India’s win is the first time since 1988 that Australia have lost a Test match at the Gabba and it secured a 2-1 series win as the visitors retained the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

To add to the scale of India’s achievement, they had to do it without skipper and star man Kohli who left Australia after the first Test in Adelaide – when the side were bowled out for 36 in the first innings – to be at the birth of his first child.

Kohli has kept a watchful eye on his teammates from back in India and was quick to praise their historic triumph, underling the resilience and perseverance they have had to show during a difficult and testing tour.

‘What a win!!! Yessssss,’ he tweeted after the thrilling run chase at the Gabba.

‘To everyone who doubted us after Adelaide, stand up and take notice.

‘Exemplary performance but the grit and determination was the standout for us the whole way.

‘Well done to all the boys and the management. Enjoy this historic feat lads. Cheers.’

India legend Sachin Tendulkar echoed the comments of Kohli, underscoring how much adversity the team had to overcome en route to a truly remarkable win in Australia.

‘Every session we discovered a new hero,’ Tendulkar tweeted.

‘Every time we got hit, we stayed put and stood taller. We pushed boundaries of belief to play fearless but not careless cricket.

‘Injuries and uncertainties were countered with poise and confidence. One of the greatest series wins! Congrats India.’
