Put shelters on every bus stop, says Mayor

"We need bus shelters everywhere, not cherry picking two, three or four here or there, doing it over a five or six year period"

Mayor Mike Cubbard has stressed the importance of providing adequate bus shelters in order to attract people to use public transport.

Speaking at Monday's City Council meeting held via zoom, Mayor Cubbard expressed the need for a long term plan.

Bus shelters must be constructed across the city according to the Mayor. "One of the most ludicrous things I think was when we were asked as councillors to send in submissions about where we require bus shelters," he commented.

'Forward thinking approach'

"We are trying to encourage people to get out of their cars, to use public transport. Surely we should be submitting every bus stop we have to the NTA (National Transport Authority ). We need bus shelters everywhere, not cherry picking two, three or four here or there, doing it over a five or six year period."

Mayor Cubbard believes that a 'forward thinking approach' has to be implemented quickly. "We need to encourage people to get out of their cars, to use public transport, use bus connects when it comes on stream," Cubbard added.

"We need to be forward thinking, to submit every bus stop we have. Let them cop on in the NTA, not to come back with 12 here and 10 there every second year. I think that is a ridiculous policy. We should be going to them saying we need them everywhere," he concluded.
