BISMARCK — There were no protests or rallies at North Dakota's capitol on Inauguration Day. It was business as usual for lawmakers who worked right through the inauguration. However, one well-known politician stood out front of the state house to show his support for Donald Trump is not going away.
Marlan Haakenson fought 30 mph wind gusts as he held his President Trump flag in front of the statehouse. The former mayor of Bismarck and county commissioner skipped watching President Joe Biden take the oath of office to show his support for the outgoing president.
"He did what he said he was going to do," Haakenson said.
He says he was surprised in a red state that he was standing out there alone. Now he is holding out hope President Biden will stick to his word and work with Republicans to stop the bleeding and heal the wounds of the deep political divide.
"If you say what you mean Biden, work with Republicans and put the nation together," Haakenson said in words for the new president.
