2.67 crore voters to exercise franchise in Kerala assembly poll

Election commission published the final voters’ list for upcoming assembly election on Thursday. There are 2,67,31,509 voters in state, of which 1,37,79,263 are women and 1,29,52,025 are men. There are also 221 transgender community voters in the list.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Election commission published the final voters’ list for upcoming assembly election on Thursday. There are 2,67,31,509 voters in state, of which 1,37,79,263 are women and 1,29,52,025 are men. There are also 221 transgender community voters in the list.
The maximum number of voters is in Malappuram (32,14,943) while the lowest is in Wayanad (6,07,068). The district with the highest number of women voters is Malappuram (16,07,004).
The maximum number of transgender voters is in Thiruvananthapuram (57). There 6,21,401 voters who are aged over 80 in the list, and 1,33,005 voters who have disabilities.
The list includes 56,759 service voters and 90,709 NRI voters. Maximum NRI voters are in Kozhikode (34,216). Coming to the young voters (18-19 years) there are 2,99,258 voters, who would cast their votes for the first time in the assembly elections. Among individual districts, Kozhikode (40,867) has the highest number of young voters.
As per the final voters’ list for last year, the total number of voters was 75.73% of the state population, which has now increased to 76.55%.
Chief electoral officer Teeka Ram Meena said that at present, there are 25,041 polling stations in state. He said that election commission has instructed the creation of auxiliary polling stations for all those stations where the number of voters exceed 1,000. Based on this instruction, state will need to create 15,730 auxiliary polling stations. With this, the total number of polling stations will increase to 40,771, he said.
Meena said that the public can still apply online for adding their names in the voters’ list as well as making other changes at the website www.nvsp.in. The applications received from Jan 1 will be examined and those which are eligible will be published as a supplementary list 10 days before the last date for withdrawal of nominations, he said. Meena urged all citizens to examine the voters’ list and ensure that their names are present.
