Dimapur, Jan. 21 (EMN): Expounding on the rich resources endowed by nature, leader of Opposition TR Zeliang called upon the residents of Jalukie valley in Peren district to be industrious and work smart in order to transform the valley into ‘Punjab of Nagaland,’ which could hold the economy of the state.

Zeliang stated this while speaking at the inauguration of Jalukie Pungchi on January 21 at the residence of the Jalukie Pungchi chairman.

The village was established on October 22, 2012, and subsequently recognised by the state government on October 12, 2017, a DIPR report stated.

While terming Jalukie Pungchi as one of the largest villages in the valley in terms of area, Zeliang stated that the village has the potential to become like an urban settlement soon. Reminding that Jalukie valley is blessed with the best and most fertile land in Nagaland and also regarded as the “Rice bowl of Nagland,” he appealed to the people to take up sustainable farming and plantation which could yield more income.

Also stating that the village is located on the foothills of Peren district, he encouraged the village authority to make a master plan in order to make it a model village with well-planned roads, drainage etc.

Mentioning the scarcity of government jobs in the contemporary Naga society, he encouraged the public to look for alternative sources of income.

In this regard, he advised the public to be industrious and work smart and transform the valley into ‘Punjab of Nagaland’ and hold the economy of the state. He further appealed to the landowners not to sell their lands for short term relief but instead protect and preserve it for generations to come.

Earlier, the special guest upon his arrival unveiled a monolith at Peren district welcome gate, while the dedicatory prayer was pronounced by Rev. Ngimrai.

The inaugural programme was chaired by Albert N Hau and Icamceu N Hau, while the welcome address was proposed by the chairman of Jalukie Pungchi, Hainlang, and short speeches were delivered by ADC Jalukie, Dr. Tinojongshi Chang, and Kelie Zeliang.

Other highlights of the programme included song presentation by Nangkamlak Pame, folk dance by Jalukie Students’ Union and special dance by Gorkha Baptist Church Fellowship.
