KOLKATA: A 38-year-old man, who lived in a power room of Kshudiram Anushilan Kendra in Maidan, was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Wednesday morning.
The initial post-mortem report on Thursday indicated he might have killed himself by slitting his neck multiple times. This was the second incident of someone taking his life by slitting his own throat early on Wednesday.
The first one was reported from the Hastings, barely a few kilometres away, where a 33-year-old man had slit his own throat after losing job during the pandemic.
Police sources said that the victim, Vijay Chaudhuri, too was upset with his financial condition. "We have found a suicide note that indicates he was in dire financial stress due to the prevailing pandemic," stated an officer. Sources claimed the victim was receiving calls back from Bihar from his family pleading him to arrange more money. Cops are trying to ascertain if his family was going through any emergency.
Police sources said Chaudhuri had shifted to the present address almost five years back. "He had come in as an apprentice from Bihar where his family still resides. He worked as a help to electricians working at the Anushilan Kendra. Ever since the lockdown, he was practically without work. He tried surviving by selling electrical equipment and toys at Babughat," said an investigating officer.
