Former Kentucky Wildcat fulfils coaching dream at Atherton
As the Atherton girls basketball team gets ready for the upcoming season, there's a lot of news this year.
From wearing mask while practicing, lots of hand sanitizer, and a new coach.
"I'm ready to rock and roll," Atherton Rebels head girls basketball coach Wayne Turner said.
Turner is latest head girls basketball coach for Atherton High School.
If that name -- Wayne Turner -- sounds familiar, you might be a Kentucky basketball fan.
Turner played for UK in the late 90s and was a part of two national championship teams.
Now, he's using that big game experience to help mold the youth.
"It's a new beginning for me," Turner said. "It's always been one of my goals to be a head coach."
After spending some time on the Louisville men's basketball coaching staff and being on other high school staffs, he finally got the opportunity to be a head coach.
This is his first head coaching job.
"When I went back to my high school, I saw that I could make an impact and I felt like I could be a value to that," he said. "I just like working with the youth. I was in that position one time and that experience that I've learned throughout my basketball career -- it would be kind of unfair for me not to share it."
As the Rebels get ready for the upcoming season -- aside from getting wins -- Turner says enjoying the game of basketball is another thing he wants to emphasize moving forward.
"My goal for the first game is for them to have fun," he said. "Obviously, we want to win but I just want them to enjoy themselves and have fun being back on the court again.
Hopefully, we can get through this safely."
Atherton will start the season on Feb. 2, taking on Seneca.
So far, that'll be one of the Rebels seven scheduled games this season.
