HUBBALLI: The Supreme Court’s committee on road safety has taken note of a recent accident involving a minibus and a tipper on a bypass road at Itigatti, near Dharwad. It has issued a notice to the Karnataka transport department and sought a report on the incident, which claimed 11 lives. The report must list steps to prevent such collisions and statistics of mishaps and fatalities recorded on the 32-km road in the past two years.
The transport department has been reportedly asked to submit the report by February 15.
This is the first time in recent years that it has received a notice from a court panel over a road accident.
J Gnanendra Kumar, additional commissioner, Karnataka State Road Safety Authority, said that he received a letter from the Supreme Court on Friday. He will forward it to the stakeholders — police, public works and transport departments, the National Highways Authority of India — on Monday, seeking responses to the committee’s queries.
Basavaraj Horatti, a former chairman of the legislative council, said that several petitions had been sent to the state government to prevent accidents on the stretch, but to no avail. “Now that the court panel has taken up the matter, the government should take up the six-lane work on the Hubballi-Dharwad bypass immediately,” he added.
