BENGALURU: The Lokayukta has ordered an investigation into the explosion of a gelatin stick-laden truck which claimed six lives near Hunsodu, 7km from Shivamogga, on January 21.
In his order, Lokayukta Justice P Vishwanath Shetty said the deputy commissioner of Shivamogga district, who is chairman of the district task force (mines) committee, must investigate illegal quarrying/mining that is being carried out in the district, crushers that are being operated without valid licence and officers who have failed to monitor and prevent illegal mining/ quarrying.

He said the mines and geology department and the superintendent of police should cooperate with the deputy commissioner in the investigation.
Shetty added immediate steps must be taking to stop illegal mining operations and initiate legal action against offenders.
No audit of gelatin sticks; minister raps officials
Mines and geology minister Murugesh R Nirani on Thursday pulled up officials, asking them why there was no audit of transportation of gelatin sticks in Shivamogga. He expressed unhappiness over district officials, particularly from Shivamogga and Yadgir, not taking timely action to contain illegal quarrying. “I have received complaints against many district officials going soft on illegal quarrying,” he said. He also warned officials on falling behind in revenue collection.
