Home destroyed in overnight fire

Firefighters are pictured early Friday on Ball Hill Road battling a fire amid frigid temperatures. More than a dozens fire departments responded to the scene.

FORESTVILLE — A home was destroyed by a fire reported around midnight.

Volunteer firefighters from 16 departments were called to 9171 Ball Hill Road between Forestville and South Dayton for the blaze. Firefighting efforts were made difficult due to frigid temperatures — with wind chills around zero — and a lack of water.

Responding departments included: Forestville, South Dayton, Silver Creek, Cassadaga, Ellington, Hanover Center, Sheridan, Ellery Center, Cherry Creek, East Town Dunkirk, Sunset Bay, Conewango, Leon, Dayton, Gowanda and Seneca Nation. Chautauqua County EMS also responded.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said it was investigating the fire. The cause was not released by press time Friday.

According to the Forestville Fire Department, the home was a total loss.

“Units arrived and began fire suppression,” the department said in a post on Facebook. “Mother nature and the fire itself fought us all night. Very stubborn fire with extremely cold temperatures and winds made it hard to get the fire out.”
