22,835 fresh cases in Tamil Nadu since January 1

CHENNAI: With 489 new additions to the Covid-19 registry on Friday,TamilNadu reportedbelow 500 fresh cases for the second consecutive day. The state also reported four deaths, which pushed the toll to 12,379. The cumulative case tally was 8,40,849.
While Chennai reported 158 cases and two deaths on Friday, Coimbatore added 54 cases and one death. The only other districtto reportdeathwasThanjavur (1).
Four districts – Kallakurichi, Krishnagiri, Perambalur and Sivaganga – had no new cases. Cases were below 60 in all other districts and 24 districts reported a single digit increase.
In 2021, TN added 22,835 new cases, though the daily cases have dipped below 500 from around 900. Chennai added 6,506 cases, followed by 2,352 cases in Coimbatore, 1,688 in Chengalpet and 1,034 cases in Tiruvallur. All other districts reported below1,000 cases in the past five weeks.
Of the 257 Covid deaths reported this year, 105 were from Chennai. Though Coimbatore added more cases than Chengalpet, the latter had 27 deaths while Coimbatore had 20. Six districts – Kallakuruchi, Karur, Perambalur, Sivaganga, Tiruvarur and Tuticorin – reported no Covid-19 deaths in 2021.
On Friday, of the 4,446 active cases, 2,472 were in the Chennai region and 1,575 in Chennai. While the western districts together reported 1,124 active cases, the 10 southern districts reported 430 and the central zone 414. Nine districts had 25 or fewer active cases – Tenkasi (25), Dharmapuri (23), Sivaganga (23), Tirupattur (22), Ariyalur (21), Tuticorin (14), Ramanathapuram (7), Perambalur (6) and Kallakurichi (4).
Meanwhile in Puducherry, active cases crossed the 300-mark (314) again as 50 fresh cases were reported even as 27 patients recovered in the past 24 hours. Two died of the infection, taking the UT’s death toll to 654.
