Town Seeking Input on ‘Yamaguchi South’ Master Plan

No one knows Pagosa Springs better than YOU do. Do you use any of the Town’s Park facilities or Participate in recreation programs? We would like input from residents, business owners, and other stakeholders for the Master Plan for Yamaguchi South! The Town is seeking your input on the future development of this property.

The Pagosa Springs Town Council has approved moving forward with creating a Master Plan for Yamaguchi South, the Town’s former sewer treatment lagoon property. This is a 26.5-acre site owned by the Town of Pagosa Springs located on South 5th Street just south of Yamaguchi Park along the western bank of San Juan River.

The site is also east of and next to the High School sports fields and the School District’s Maintenance building.

Please join us for the Yamaguchi South Open House tomorrow, Wednesday, February 10, from 12-7pm, and Thursday, February 11, from 1-8pm, both virtually on MyPagosa.org and in-person at the Ross Aragon Community Center. Thank you for your participation.

The Town recently hired THK Associates to conduct the master planning process. As part of their initial work, they completed an analysis of the highest and best use for the property. This research resulted in recommending Yamaguchi South be designed for additional recreational uses that balance the site constraints and costs, and may consider including, but not limited to:

  • Additional baseball/softball fields
  • A multi-purpose field that allows for an amphitheater use
  • Additional tennis/pickleball courts
  • Additional river access and picnic/pavilion areas
  • Features identified through the public engagement process

Town Council considered THK’s Highest and Best Use Report in November 2020 and agreed with the findings, noting that the public engagement process will define the specific desired improvements.

Over the next 3 months, the Town and THK will invite you to participate in a series of events to ensure YOUR voice is heard. These events will be a combination of in-person and virtual open house(s) and virtual public review and comment events to ensure everyone can share in the way most comfortable to you. So, please register to stay informed and receive updates on upcoming events.

The Final Yamaguchi South Master Plan document that results from this process will be the long-range future vision for this site that includes the recreational amenities and site improvements identified through this public engagement process.
