VARANASI: The death of a man allegedly in police custody in the
Buxa area in
Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh (UP) triggered protests by locals who indulged in stone pelting, leading to injuries to several
policemen on Friday.
Three policemen, including the in-charge of Buxa police station, have been suspended. A magisterial probe into the matter has also been ordered.
According to reports, the police had arrested
Krishna Yadav alias Pujari, resident of Chak Mirzapur village, in a loot case on Thursday night.
He later died in police custody.

His relatives and local residents blocked a road and started pelting stones, which led to several police personnel being injured. The injured policemen were admitted to the
district hospital for treatment.
Jaunpur superintendent of police (SP) Raj Karan Nayyar said that Krishna was arrested in a loot case on February 1. The police had recovered Rs 64,000 along with 13 mobile phones from him.
The SP said that after Krishna complained of stomach pain, he was taken to the community health centre. From there, he was referred to the district hospital.
“He died during the treatment at the district hospital. Since he died in police custody, a panel was constituted for post-mortem examination, and three policemen were suspended,” he said.
Meanwhile, Jaunpur district magistrate (DM)
Manish Kumar Verma and the SP went to Krishna’s village and met his family members.
They assured the family members that a proper investigation will take place and action will be taken against the guilty persons.
The DM said that the additional district magistrate Ram Prakash has been assigned for the magisterial probe.
