KANPUR: A man allegedly hurled acid on his sister-in-law in Sikandara police area of Kanpur Dehat on Thursday afternoon when the victim, Puja Devi (32), a resident of Barra, was on her way to meet her aunt in Mangalpur area of Kanpur Dehat in a bus.
"When the bus reached Sikandara bus stand, her brother-in-law arrived there on a motorcycle and asked her to alight from the bus. When she offered resistance, he hurled acid on her face and tried to flee.
However, passersby managed to nab him and handed him over to the police,” police said adding the victim was rushed to the nearby community health centre after suffering burns.
During police questioning, the man, Ankit of Madnapur in Kanpur Dehat, told the police that he was living with his married brother, his wife and their child in Barra area of Kanpur. On Thursday, the victim left the house for her aunt’s place in Mangalpur without informing anyone. Infuriated over her act, he attacked her with acid.
“The sulphuric acid was apparently thrown on the woman’s face and head causing burns. The accused had purchased it from a shop in Sikandara. The woman is under observation of doctors,” police said.
A case has been registered at the Sikandara police station.
SP Kanpur Dehat Keshav Kumar Choudhary said Ankit was arrested and has been charged with relevant sections of IPC. It came to fore that the man was into an alleged illicit relationship with the woman.
“She started spurning his advances since the past few days. On Thursday he waylaid her but was again rebuffed. He then attacked her with acid. Passersby rescued her and alerted the police,” the SP added.
