CUDDALORE: A history-sheeter accused of murdering a member of a rival gang was killed in an encounter by police on Wednesday in Cuddalore district.
The deceased, 30-year-old Krishnan of a village near Panruti, led his gang in killing K Veerangan alias Veera, 30, of Subburayalu Nagar on Tuesday night, allegedly to avenge the murder of his aide Sathish six years ago. The gang fell upon Veera when he was returning home, beheaded him and kept the head in front of Sathish's house.

Police swung into action to trace the culprits involved. A team lead by Pudupettai sub-inspector Deepan spotted three men on two motorbikes and stopped them. One fled, while the others, identified as Ramanan and Rajasekar, were detained. After they confessed to murdering Veera the previous night, police identified the escaped motorist as Krishnan and picked him up.
Promising to help nab the rest of his gang, Krishnan to-ok Deepan and his team to Gummudiyamkuppam where he attacked the SI with a sharp-edged weapon. Deepan sustained cut injuries on the right hand. When Krishnan again attempted to attack, the SI shot at him thrice and he swooned.
Police rushed him to a nearby primary health centre before shifting him to the government medical college hospital where he died.
