NAGPUR: Police on Thursday registered an FIR against two nurses in connection with Bhandara hospital fire incident which had claimed the lives of 10 newborns.
A case has been registered under IPC sections 304 of Indian Penal Code (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
The fire had engulfed the Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the early hours of January 9.
The nurses were terminated following the report of an expert committee.
They were working on a contractual basis.
The report, which was not shared with police for reasons best known to the government, had also led to the suspension of civil surgeon Dr Pramod Khandate and transfer of addl CS Dr Sunita Badhe and sister-in-charge Jyoti Bharaskar.
The nurses may face imprisonment up to 10 years and also fine if the charges against them are proved.
The police took almost one-and-a-half-month to register offences against the accused.
According to police, they were waiting for the advanced technical reports from the experts and concerned departments and also the replies to the queries raised before the forensic laboratory were awaited.
