Leader’s ‘ghar wapsi’ a fillip for Congress in Murshidabad
Behrampore: Murshidabad zilla parishad sabhadhipati Mosharof Hossain Mondal joined the Congress on Friday, marking a “homecoming” when many Trinamool leaders were making a beeline for BJP.
Mondal took the Congress flag from Pradesh Congress president Adhir Chowdhury at a Behrampore rally, two days after the Trinamool showed him the door for alleged anti-party activities.
He came with zilla parishad member Sabina Yasmin and a host of panchayat-level leaders from Naoda, Domkal, Beldanga and Sagardighi, of which Naoda and Beldanga come under Chowdhury’s parliamentary constituency.
The “ghar wapsi” of Mondal is a shot in the arm for Congress, which wants to reclaim the Naoda assembly seat. “I am quite comfortable in the Congress, the party I grew up with. Today, Sabina and I joined the Congress. I would like to remind you that Trinamool gained strength in Murshidabad soon after I joined the party. Now, with me leaving Trinamool, the party will be back to where it was four years ago,” he said.
Mondal has already started organising Sabhadhipati Football Tournaments in Naoda to expand his mass base. He also installed a statue of former RSP MLA Jayanta Biswas with an eye on Left votes.
Pradesh Congress president Chowdhury asserted at the rally that many panchayat pradhans and elected representatives would soon be joining the Congress. “They have requested me to organize the joining programme once elections are announced,” he said.
The Congress veteran showcased the trend in Murshidabad to debunk the Modi-Mamata political binary in Bengal. “ People have realized that only a secular alliance can save the state, as well as the country. The process has started in Punjab,” Chowdhury said.
