Two German nationals, currently lodged in Satara District Prison following their arrest for cannabis cultivation at a bungalow in Wai town, allegedly created ruckus in their barracks and also assaulted jail guards as they resorted to vandalism earlier this week.

On Tuesday, the two foreigners, who were lodged in Barrack 5 of the prison, allegedly started creating ruckus as they undressed. A Satara District Police official said that as per the First Information Report registered with them, the duo punched and kicked two jail guards who tried to stop them. They also damaged the security camera system on the premises of the barrack and vandalised the door of a toilet.

Satara District Superintendent of Police, Ajay Kumar Bansal, said, “Based on the complaint by the prison authorities, an offence under Indian Penal Code provision for assault on a public servant has been registered against the two German nationals.”

A prison official said that an incident report in this regard has been sent to the Pune-based headquarters of the State Prison Department.

On February 15, Satara District Police had arrested the duo, who were staying at a bungalow in Wai town of the district, and seized large number of cannabis plants which were growing in the bedrooms, balcony and terrace of the house, along with an elaborate set-up for the cultivation of the contraband plant. After their arrest, the two were remanded to police custody till February 20 and later to judicial custody, for which they are currently lodged in Satara District Prison.

Festive offer

The seized cannabis plants weighed around 29 kg and were worth Rs 2.3 lakh in the illegal market. Police had also seized several gunny bags of plant-growth medium like coco peat, fertilizers and plant growth boosters, chemical sprinklers, temperature monitoring units, in-house lighting arrangements etc.

Police probe had revealed that the two German nationals had been arrested in 2017 in Goa in a case of narcotics seizure and were out on bail when they were arrested by Satara Police. A probe into possible distribution chains for marijuana is currently being conducted by police. Police said that two Germans had entered the country with a valid visa, but restrictions were put on their travel by authorities in Goa, pending a trial against them.
