A craftsman who fashions old pool and snooker cues into walking sticks has run out of material.

Now Tom Chalmers has issued a plea to fellow Buddies to help him out, joking: “If I don’t get some cues soon Mrs Chalmers will burden me with more housework.”

He has been making his Scottish themed walking sticks for years.

But never faced such a drought, saying: “It’s really because all the Paisley pubs have been closed.

“That’s usually where I get them from. People have handed me really good snooker cues boxed and in three and four piece sections.

“But these are really too good for me to use, they are better handed to someone who wants to play the game with a top of the range cue.

“What I am after are those that have seen better days and are ready for a new life.”

He presented Nicola Sturgeon with a Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora MacDonald cane two months before she became First Minister in 2014.

Scottish themes - Tom is passionate about his country

The 64-year-old has just got back to work as a lollipop man at Bushes Primary.

His wife Jean is also a school patroller in Glenburn.

He sells some of his work at his own unit Tom’s Sticks and Prints in the Paisley Centre.

Oor Wullie - Tom depicts the bold lad as a Yes supporter

They include an Argyll & Sutherland Highlander and both Celtic and Rangers canes.

He also did a football special for a Liverpool fan containing depictions of Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Alan Hansen and Bill Shankly.

Most of his designs take around six hours work.

Fancy trio - A nod to nature

Tom said: “I love turning the old sticks into something new.

“I am actually a painter and decorator to trade, but I can never keep still, I have got to keep active.

“But there is only so much housework I want to do!”
