CHENNAI: TN reported a spike in vaccination numbers for the fourth straight day on Thursday when more than 81,000 people got their shots. With this, more than 6.7 lakh people have been inoculated in the state.
Meanwhile, the state added 482 new cases and four deaths to its Covid registry on Thursday. However, with the recovery rate crossing 98%, the number of active cases dropped to 3,978.
The active case tally was around 4,500 the same day last month.
The case fatality ratio has been hovering around 1.5% for more than three months now. With four deaths, the toll increased to 12,508, the second highest in the country after Maharashtra (52,280).
Of the four deceased, three were aged above 60 and had comorbid conditions such as diabetes or hypertension.
Hotspot Chennai once again reported the maximum number of cases (189) and deaths (3). The active case count here crossed the 1,800-mark on Thursday. Health secretary J Radhakrishnan blamed the rise in cases on clusters due to violation of social distancing norms at family events and a considerable drop in wearing masks.
With the discharge rate marginally outpacing the infection rate, the active case count remained almost unchanged this month at Coimbatore (48 new cases on Thursday) and Chengalpet (42). Similar trends were observed in other cities such as Madurai (6), Trichy (9) and Salem (8). Ariyalur, Perambalur and Kallakurichi reported no new case on Thursday.
Radhakrishnan requested more people to get tested in case they had symptoms. So far, the state has tested 1.73 crore people, including the 50,543 tested on Thursday.
