There’s more news in the ongoing saga regarding sales of backcountry wilderness camping permits this year at Rocky Mountain National Park following its failure to launch on schedule on March 1.

In an effort to prevent a crash of the online registration system like the one that occurred this week and shut down the process, reservation sales will now be spread over several days next week.

After the system meltdown this past Monday, officials announced that they would try again next Monday. On Friday, they adjusted that plan by staggering the availability of permits “in an attempt to prevent an overload of the system,” according to a park news release. Now the plan is:

  • Monday, March 8: registrations available for May and June
  • Wednesday, March 10: registrations for July
  • Friday, March 12: registrations for August
  • Sunday, March 14: registrations for September and October

On those days, registration will begin at 8 a.m.

Note that this reservation system has nothing to do with “car-camping” reservations in the park’s developed campgrounds. This is for overnight backpacking camping permits only. More information can be found here.
