Karnataka on Tuesday reported 1,135 fresh cases, and 710 of them coming from Bengaluru, crossing the 1k mark for the first time since December 25. Karnataka logged 1,275 new Covid-19 cases and four related fatalities, taking the caseload to 9.63 lakh and the toll to 12,407, the health department said on Wednesday. The day also saw 479 patients getting discharged after recovery. (PTI)

Two Nigerians have been arrested with synthetic drugs worth Rs 75 lakh, police said on Wednesday. Joseph Ndukwe (38) and Uzochukwu Mark Maurice Mb Atuegwu (38) were arrested for allegedly possessing and supplying the drugs to people in Bengaluru, the police said. While Ndukwe had come on a tourist visa, Atuegwu arrived in India on a business visa and indulged in unlawful activities, they said.

Teachers plan protest at Bengaluru

Karnataka Rajya Madhyamika Shala Noukarara Sangha and other teachers’ organisations have decided to protest in front of the residence of education minister Suresh Kumar in Bengaluru on March 23 to urge the fulfilment of various demands. Sangha convener Basavaraj Dharwad said Suresh Kumar had assured of addressing the long-pending demands of teachers, but not a single demand was met. “No funds have been allocated in the recent budget. District admins on toes as Covid cases rise in north Karnataka

Some districts in north Karnataka, which had reported just a few cases till recently, have started reporting cases in double digit over the last 3-4 days. The rise in the number of cases is being seen in Kalaburagi, Bidar, Dharwad, Belgavi and Ballari and other districts. In order to check the virus spread, the respective district administrations have taken strict measures to implement Covid-19 guidelines. Majority of the districts in the region had seen only a few cases since November last, while some had witnessed cases in only single digit. Single-day highest cases over the last four days — Kalaburagi has reported 43, followed by Bidar 33, Dharwad 25, and Ballari 26.
