MADIKERI: Once a green district after reporting its first case of Covid-19 in March last year,
Kodagu district is now battling a sizeable increase in
positive cases.
One of the least affected pockets in
Karnataka, cases have risen in the past week, forcing authorities to take stiff measures. On Wednesday, the district reported 15 positive cases, taking the number of active cases to 99. It has 53 containment zones.
Charulatha Somal,
Kodagu deputy commissioner, has warned strict action will be taken against those who violate
Covid protocol.
“Wearing masks, social distancing and using sanitiser is compulsory,” she said. “Those found with fake Covid certificates in border areas will be fined.”
Part of the spike is being fuelled by outbreaks in educational institutions and places of worship.
Some staff at Bhagamandala temple have tested positive and authorities have sent swab samples of the other staff for tests. The temple remained closed on Wednesday and will remain closed on Thursday too. The closure could be extended depending on results of the tests.
Dr Mohan, Kodagu district health officer, said: “We will get test results on Thursday and a final decision on reopening the temple will be taken by the deputy commissioner.”
Meanwhile, six students of St Michael PU College tested positive and the school will remain closed for a week, confirmed Dr Mohan. Covid tests are being conducted on all students and faculty.
Bhanwar Singh Neena, zilla panchayat executive officer said PDO’s have been instructed to take special care to prevent a second wave of infections.
