BERHAMPUR: In a major boost to the public healthcare system, 52 health centres in Ganjam district won the Kayakalpa award-2020-21.
Among these are the district headquarters hospital, four sub-divisional health centres, 15 community health centres, 23 primary health centres, eight urban primary health centres and one sub-centre, sources said.
The UPHCs located in Berhampur won the prestigious award for the third consecutive year.
All health centres have received a total cash award of Rs 43 lakh with the highest amount of Rs 3 lakh going to the district headquarters hospital or City Hospital here, said chief district medical officer, Uma Shankar Mishra.
Similarly, 17 health centres in Kandhamal district, including the district headquarters hospital at Phulbani bagged the Kayakalpa award-2020-21.
The Kayakalpa award given under the National Health Mission (NHM) was instituted by the ministry of health and family welfare in 2015 to encourage cleanliness and hygiene in health centres across the country.
Several factors, including cleanliness of the hospital and its premises, infection-control measures, disposal of waste and undertaking of awareness campaigns were considered to determine the winner, said assistant project manager,
National Urban Health Mission (NUHM), Lambodar Digal. “Our target is to deliver public health. We are happy that the government has recognized the health delivery system,” said the CDMO.
A central team visited the health centres in November and December to evaluate the performance of health centres for the award. Earlier, all UPHCs of the Berhampur Municipal Corportaion bagged the ISO (Indian Standard Organization) certification for Quality Management System.
“We have paid lot of attention to the cleanliness of hospital premises and smoothness in the delivery of services at the health centres,” said Suresh Chandra Sahu, director of Card, a NGO that manages the UPHC at Baikuntha Nagar, here.
