Assam & West Bengal Goes to Poll for Phase 2 of Assembly Election

A total of 37 candidates in Phase II of Assam elections 2021 who have criminal record and cases pending against them. Nijam Uddin Choudhury, contesting from the Algapur seat on an AIUDF ticket has been booked for rape, Madhu Ram Deka (BJP), Diganta Kalita (BJP) and Gobinda Chandra Basumatary (a former NDFB leader) have murder charges against them. Sarsing Enleng, contesting as an Independent candidate from Baithalangso has booked on charges of kidnapping.

Meanwhile, over 73,44, 631 voters in 39 constituencies across 13 districts of Assam is all set to vote on Thursday. The fate of 345 candidates will be sealed in the EVMs. Voting will begin at 7 AM and is supposed to go on till 6 PM. Of the total 354 candidates, the number of male candidates is 319 and there are 26 women candidates contesting in Phase 2. In Phase 1, there were 264 candidates and the number of male candidates were 241 and women were 23.

A total of 8, 998 polling stations have been set up. There are 556 all women polling stations. 1,594 auxiliary polling stations have been set up keeping in view the COVID situation.

Meanwhile, a total of 30 assembly constituencies from the districts of South 24 Parganas, Bankura, Paschim Medinipur and Purba Medinipur are heading in to vote.

The prized seat of Nandigram will also go to polls in this phase – Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is taking on her former ministerial colleague Suvendu Adhikari, who had joined the BJP in December last year. Out of the 171 candidates in the fray, 92 are women. On the other hand, in Assam, 27 constituencies are going to polls today and have an electorate between 1.5 and 2 lakh.
