Madhya Pradesh: Man dies in custody, five cops suspended

Sohail Khan’s family has alleged that the police demanded Rs 50 lakh for his release. They claimed several marks were found on the body following his death.

Five policemen in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur district were suspended after a 21-year-old man, arrested for allegedly possessing contraband, died in custody on Friday.

Sohail Khan’s family has alleged that the police demanded Rs 50 lakh for his release. They claimed several marks were found on the body following his death.

Following the allegations, a departmental inquiry as well as a magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the matter.
Superitendent of Police, Siddharth Choudhury told The Sunday Express: “The five have been suspended as inquiry has been ordered against them. The body did not have any injury marks but privates parts were ruptured that gave rise to suspicion. However, the post mortem report is still awaited.”

The five suspended policemen — a Sub-Inspector, a head constable and three constables — were from the narcotics bureau.

As per the police, Sub-Inspector Rajmal Daima, along with his juniors Prashant Kethwas and Kamal Patel apprehended Sohail Khan at a checkpoint on the Neemuch highway on April 3.

The resident of Pratapgarh, Rajasthan, was allegedly found carrying of 90 grams of brown sugar, they said.

On the same day, Daima handed Khan over to the custody of juniors Pirulal Soni and Dinesh Parmar, a police statement said. After this, it said, Daima headed for the Narcotics cell police station in Indore for further procedure.

Sohail Khan’s brother, Izhar Khan said the family went to meet Sub-Inspector Daima of the Narcotics police station at his office on Neemuch Road after learning about the arrest. But he claimed their vehicle was stopped on the road and they was not allowed to meet Sohail Khan. “Daima demanded Rs 50 lakh for his release but we were told to come to the police station the next day. However, the next day we got a call asking if Sohail was suffering from any breathing issues but we told them he was a healthy individual. After that we reached hospital and found him dead,” the brother said.
