Bihar: Police claims arresting kingpin and four others in Nawada hooch deaths

PATNA: Nawada police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested the kingpin who had manufactured poisonous hooch resulting in the death of at least 16 persons and causing illness to at least ten persons. All these persons had consumed the liquor on and after Holi.
One Arvind Yadav of Kharidi Bigha village is being termed as the kingpin who had manufactured the poisonous hooch at his village and had sold it to villagers after packing it in pouches.

At least three of the 16 slain persons were from Kharidi Bigha while rest were from neighbouring villages like Gondapur, Siswan, Budhaul, Kanhai Nagar and New area, all falling under Town police station area in Nawada.
Nawada Sadar SDPO Upendra Prasad on Tuesday said that besides Yadav, four other persons namely Pappu Yadav, Suraj alias Karpu Choudhary, Minta Devi and her son Anil Choudhary have also been arrested in connection with poisonous hooch manufacturing and selling it.
“Till now it has surfaced before police in course of Yadav’s interrogation that he had manufactured the poisonous liquor at Kharidi Bigha, had got it packed and sold it to villagers with help of others,” he said.
SDPO Prasad said that investigation is going on to know what all raw materials he had smuggled and with whose help he had manufactured the hooch.
When asked, Nawada SP Dhurat Saayli Savlaram said that raids were going on to nab several more persons in connection with the deaths.

“The kingpin is Yadav. He was arrested on Tuesday. Rest four were arrested on Monday. Yadav is from Kharidi Bigha village. He is being interrogated at present,” she said.
SP said more details would surface soon which police would be in a situation to share on Wednesday.
The SP said that the official death toll from hooch poisoning is 15 in Nawada. “Ten had fallen ill. Few of them are under treatment at present. Altogether ten separate FIRs have been lodged in connection with the hooch deaths and illness,” she said.
Savlaram said that police have been able to get post mortem of ten out of the 15 deceased persons conducted at Nawada and Patna.
“Things will become further clear over the reason behind the deaths after police received post mortem reports of these dead persons,” she said.
The SP said that action is expected to be taken against two police officers by Wednesday in connection with the hooch deaths for dereliction of duty.
