MADIKERI: Yeravara Boja, the estate worker suspected of setting his brother-in-law's house on fire and killing seven people, was found dead in a coffee estate near Mugutageri on Tuesday. Boja, 50, is suspected to have consumed poison.
In the early hours of Saturday, Boja had poured petrol into his brother-in-law's house and set fire to it, apparently to get back at his wife, Babi, who had left him a week ago after a quarrel.
Several family members had gathered at the house for Good Friday and the fire killed four children along with Boja's wife and an aunt. Another relative, a 26-year-old woman named Bhagya, died of burns in a Mysuru hospital on Tuesday, taking the toll to 7.
Police said Boja and his wife had a strained relationship over the years and quarrelled often. After she moved in with her brother, Boja continued to call her and threatened to kill her if she did not return to him. Angered by her refusal, he is believed to have committed the crime when he was heavily drunk.
On Tuesday, an estate labourer found Boja's body in a decomposed state and informed cops.
Police said Boja had contacted his daughter, who lives in Kalathmadu, around 2.20am on Sunday, a day after the crime. "He told her that he had killed her mother and now that she had gone far away from him, he would kill himself. He then switched off his mobile phone," a police official said. Boja's phone was found next to his body.
Senior police officers visited the spot where Boja's body was retrieved. Babi's brother, wife and their infant son had made it alive while two sons from a previous marriage were killed.
Bhagya, who died on Tuesday, lost her son and daughter in the fire while her husband, Thola, survived.
