The Region of Durham has fallen victim to a cyber attack.
In a statement issued Friday, April 9, the region says it “recently became aware of a cybersecurity incident that occurred with a third-party software provider, which impacted the region.”
The statement adds the incident “did not impact the region’s core IT systems” and that relevant authorities and regulators were notified.

“Our IT teams, working with the service provider, took immediate steps to secure our systems,” the region says. “Our experts are now investigating the matter to determine the information that may be involved and the impact of this incident. It is important to note that the vulnerability related to the service provider has been addressed and our systems have been secured.”
ITWorld Canada is reporting a ransomware group has posted alleged copies of documents from the Region of the Durham, including what appear to be Durham paramedic service documents listing patient names, address, dates of birth and health card numbers.
