Earth Day turns 51st this year and organizers of the Solano County Earth Day Cleanup are celebrating with a week-long digital event April 19-24.
Enjoy simple, sustainable solutions and tips and learn about local community cleanup groups each day. Cap the event with a self-directed volunteer trash cleanup.

“We invite all of our Solano County neighbors to join us in this annual celebration of Earth Day by doing what helps restore our communities and the planet,” said Narcisa Untal, senior planner with the Solano County Department of Resource Management, in a press statement. “Every choice we make to live more sustainably and every piece of trash we remove contributes to a healthier Solano County and environment for everyone.”
More than 5,000 pounds of trash and recyclables are typically recovered by Solano County Earth Day Cleanup volunteers each year. Due to the ongoing pandemic, locally organized site cleanups were cancelled for the second year in a row.
If conducting a trash cleanup, participants are reminded to wear safety gloves, follow Solano County’s public health guidelines for COVID-19 and to recycle. Bag clean recyclable containers separately and drop them at a recycling center (find a location at calrecycle.ca.gov).
Participants are also asked to download the Ocean Conservancy’s CleanSwell mobile app to record trash collection data.
