Covid-19 cases surge in Northeast; caseload breaches 12-lakh mark in India

Covid-19 cases continue to surge including in the North Eastern States. In Assam, 352 persons were tested positive out of 73,329 tests carried out.

According to a PIB report, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday that the Health Department is planning to conduct 1 lakh tests daily. The state is expecting to receive 8 lakh fresh stocks of Covid-19 vaccines by April 16, the report said.

In Manipur state, Covid-19 active cases rose to 107 on Sunday. Chief Minister N Biren Singh had taken his first dose of vaccine and had appealed to all eligible persons to get inoculated, it stated.

Sikkim recorded 54 new Covid-19 positive cases, out of which 14 persons were tourists, taking the state’s active tally to 169. A total 2,662 persons were vaccinated at different parts of Sikkim.

In Tripura, 48 persons tested positive with one mortality. Reports also stated that 200 positive cases have been detected in the last 12 days.

The Health Minister of Meghalaya, Alexander Laloo Hek, informed that a meeting would be convened on Tuesday to discuss the surge in Covid-19 cases in the state while revealing that the government has not discussed the possibility of re-imposing lockdown in Meghalaya.

Darrang, a border village in West Jaintia Hills, has closed down all community activities including schools, after 13 of its residents were tested positive for the virus.

All schools, public gathering, MGNREGA work and shops will be closed in view of the fresh Covid-19 cases, the report read.

Nagaland’s Covid-19 active cases have increased to 167 as 11 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

Highest single-day rise

Meanwhile, India continues to witnessed surge in fresh Covid-19 cases, registering highest single-day rise so far on Monday by recording 1,68,912 new cases with five states — Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala — accounting for 70.16%.

The Union Health Ministry updated that 904 deaths and 75,086 recoveries were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 1,21,56,529 with 89.86% recovery rate.

India’s total active caseload has reached 12,01,009 and the tally rose to 1,35,27,717.
