BEHRAMPORE: A Congress worker was killed and six others were injured in an armed clash between Congress and Trinamool Congress supporters at Murshidabad’s Hariharpara on Monday night.
A profusely bleeding Kashem Ali (38) died of splinter injuries on the way to Murshidabad Medical College. Sanjukta Morcha supporters blocked the Hariharpara state highway in protest hours before the chief minister’s visit to Murshidabad.

On Tuesday morning, security forces reached out to adjacent villages as a confidence-building exercise among voters.
Injured Kurban Sheikh said: “Trinamool goons were doing the rounds of our village, threatening people to vote for the party. When some Congress supporters came out in protest, the miscreants opened fire and hurled bombs at us.”
Hariharpara’s Congress candidate Mir Alamgir (Palash) alleged that Trinamool targeted the constituency after realising it would face a tough fight there. “They care less for Election Commission guidelines, flout Covid restrictions and reach out to villages after 10pm to intimidate voters. They have come to realize that they are losing Hariharpara,” Alamgir said.
Trinamool candidate Niamot Sheikh complained that Congress was giving a “political colour” to a clash over a land dispute and was trying to gain sympathy of voters. “We want the culprits booked,” Sheikh said.
Police have detained 10 people in this connection.
