Maharashtra reported a surge of over 35% in fatalities on Friday and added its highest ever death toll of 773 Covid deaths. The state had reported 568 deaths on Thursday. Mumbai contributed to less than 10% of the total fatalities in the state. While 72 deaths were reported from Mumbai, Mumbai Metropolitan Region (excluding Mumbai) reported 108. Daily detections in the rest of MMR were also higher than Mumbai on Friday. While Mumbai added 7,199 cases, the MMR region, which is spread across three districts and eight corporations, added 9,769 cases. Nearly 60% of samples of the newly identified and infectious Indian variant of SARS-CoV-2 called B.1.617 have been found in Maharashtra, although the double mutant strain is dominant only in select districts and cities, not the entire state. Sharad Pawar urges sugar mills to make oxygen
NCP chief Sharad Pawar has urged sugar mills to focus on the production of the life-saving oxygen gas at their plants to address the current shortage of medical oxygen for Covid-19 patients in Maharashtra. Pawar, who is the president of Pune-based Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI), has conveyed his views to sugar cooperatives in a letter by director general of the institute Shivajirao Deshmukh on Thursday. The NCP chief appealed to sugar mills, who had completed their crushing season, to use their premises to set up Covid-19 care centres and supply oxygen kits to patients.
