Gogglebox viewers were quick to complain on social media tonight after spotting what they suspected was breaking of social distancing rules.

Each week as the hit Channel 4 show starts, the continuity announcer tells viewers that all of the stars are sticking to social distancing rules to help stop the spread of Covid-19.

But viewers were quick to complain when they saw one family apparently not sticking to meeting families and friends indoors.

Since March 29 the country has been allowed to meet outdoors with up to six people, or as many people as belong to two households.

But the show opened tonight with Tom Malone Snr celebrating his birthday with wife Julie, their three grandchildren and son Shaun and partner Jade.

Viewers were quick to pick up on the apparent breach of the rules.

One wrote: "Nice social distancing from the Malone's there! #Gogglebox"

A second added: "The country’s gonna lose its shit about the Malones family gathering #gogglebox"

"Everyone's keeping their social distance. Sure looks like it," a third added.

But others rushed to their defence, pointing out that families with young children can bubble up for childcare reasons.

Gogglebox airs on Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4.
