UP panchayat election results 2021 live updates: Counting of votes completed for all but zila panchayat members

The counting of votes for UP panchayat polls is under way for the second day. All results are expected to be announced by this afternoon. Counting is taking place at 829 centres. Samajwadi Party too claims victory in UP panchayat polls

Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday said the ruling BJP was a “sinking ship”, claiming that his own party has scored big in the panchayat polls and was set to win the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections next year. The SP becomes the latest party to claim “victory” in the state-wide panchayat elections, for which ballot papers were being counted since Sunday. On Monday, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Aam Aadmi Party claimed they had won a major chunk of the seats in the four-phase elections. (PTI)

Man arrested for 2018 Bulandshahr violence wins panchayat poll

Yogesh Raj, a former Bajrang Dal worker who was arrested in connection with mob violence that led to the killing of police inspector Subodh Singh in 2018 in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr, has won a panchayat poll in the district. Yogesh had contested from ward number 5 for the panchayat polls and has defeated independent candidate Nirdosh Chaudhary by 2,150 votes. He was on bail while he was contesting the elections. (ANI)

BJP-backed candidates leading in UP rural polls

BJP-backed candidates were leading in initial phases of counting for zila panchayat wards in the four-phased rural local bodies elections held last month, followed by Samajwadi Party and Mayawati led BSP-supported candidates. Independents were leading or had registered victories in many seats. More than 3,19,300 candidates were elected unopposed, the state election commission said on Sunday.
