In Mole Valley there are 13 district council seats up for grabs in the May 2021 local elections with 41 councillors currently representing the 21 wards.

The last district election, in May 2019, saw the Liberal Democrats dramatically take control of Mole Valley District Council.

The Conservatives entered the vote with 21 of the council's 41 seats under control but lost nine, while the Ashtead Independents gained one seat to improve their tally to seven.

In March of 2020, the Government confirmed all local elections due to take place on May 7 in England and Wales would be postponed for a year, so Mole Valley residents will be voting for those district seats alongside every county council seat as the whole of Surrey County Council is up for election this year.

We asked all candidates running in the Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) and Surrey County Council elections to send a 100-word bio telling SurreyLive readers why they should vote for them, which you will find below.

David Hawksworth, Ashtead Independent

You are best represented by Independent councillors - free to vote without the control of national parties (unlike the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives).

During my five years representing you as your councillor, I have vigorously contributed to debates on Ashtead’s future - safeguarding recreation areas, green spaces, trees, and hedges, which have such an important role in battling climate change; I will continue to do so. Because of its effects on health, I will also continue to press for new and stringent initiatives to improve air quality.

Another priority is to fight for protection of our built and natural heritage.

Julia Mottershead, Labour

I have lived with my husband in Ashtead since 1996; our children went to The Greville Primary School and the girls to Therfield.

I feel privileged to live in such a beautiful, thriving village. You may have seen me pottering round local shops with my wicker trolley! I am the admissions officer at Sutton Grammar School; over the years I have been a school governor and Guide helper.

I also enjoy bellringing. I am standing as a Labour Party candidate as I am proud to be part of the party which genuinely wishes to serve the whole community.

Gavin Newton, Conservative and Unionist Party

Colette ‘t Hart,Liberal Democrat

Since 2005, Colette ‘t Hart lives in Ashtead with her daughter who attends secondary school in the area.

With more than 20 years of experience in IT consulting, a lifetime activist for a fair society, and a community group leader to help people affected by cancer, Colette wants to use her problem solving and leadership skills to support Ashtead's vision, and provide the village with more sustainable affordable housings, free day-care for all families, and more funding in our schools to enable our children to become better skilled, compassionate and well prepared for the future.

Ashtead Park

Stephen Eagle, Labour

I was raised in Surrey and after 13 years overseas in the hospitality business I returned to Surrey in 1994 and have lived in Ashtead for 7 years.

I am a Fellow of the Institute of Hospitality and currently run the catering services for two local schools. I am passionate about supporting local businesses especially restaurants and pubs.

My concerns for Ashtead are the traffic problems around schools with surrounding streets being used as "car parks" and the increasing litter on the A24. I support our NHS by volunteering at Epsom Racecourse as a vaccinator with St John Ambulance.

Jon Brewer, Liberal Democrat

Jon and his family have been Ashtead residents for 25 years.

With a wide set of experiences, spanning local authority, charity, telecommunications and technology sectors and now working in the field of cyber security he has developed an increasing interest in the issue of 'disinformation' - how and why it is happening and how best to counter it, and the polarisation in society it creates.

Jon believes there is a need to find common ground in the centre of politics, and this is the natural territory for Liberal Democrats in the UK with electoral reform and regulation of digital media.

David Harper, Ashtead Independent

I am an Independent councillor focused on supporting local residents and issues. If your bin isn't collected, or there is a planning application that might affect your enjoyment of your property, I am here to challenge the council appropriately to support you.

I have served on the Scrutiny Committee, and have always studied proposals and policies in detail. I take care to prepare arguments preventing them from adversely affecting Ashtead residents.

I am doing all I can to ensure that Ashtead's domestic gardens get a high level of protection in the face of the new Local Plan.

Linda St. John, Conservative

No bio supplied.

Richard Essex, Green

Richard has long been involved in supporting a more sustainable environment, and socially responsible investment, as a financial adviser. He currently chairs the Surrey Climate Commission.

He believes passionately in protecting our local countryside and Areas of Natural Beauty. He is equally passionate however that this doesn't have to be in conflict with a successful local business community.

Richard fully supports the Green Party view that a successful economy is one that provides a sustainable and fair society for all. In achieving this he will campaign on increasing social infrastructure such as affordable housing and public transport.

Ashtead Village

Sharon Quinn - Labour

I am a state school primary teacher who has lived in Ashtead for ten years. I was brought up to believe that a decent society provides access to affordable housing, healthcare and education for all and that we all benefit by living in such a society.

I have always voted Labour and joined the Labour Party several years ago, worried by the damage caused to social care, housing, education and health services by years of Tory austerity.

If elected, I will strive to improve services for local people in these areas with consideration of the climate emergency.

Philippa Shimmin, Liberal Democrat

Philippa, an Ashtead resident for many years, brought up her family here who attended local schools. She cares about protecting our environment and ensuring disadvantaged people have a voice. She has campaigned to keep local services open and make sure that children and young people have their needs met.

As a Mole Valley councillor from 2012-2016, she chaired the Access Group, was on the board of Mole Valley Housing Association and several council committees.

She has been a governor for Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust, the school and college at Young Epilepsy and a trustee for Leatherhead United Charities.

Mary Cooper, Ashtead Independent

First elected in 2012 as an Ashtead Independent, I have been a proactive community representative working hard for Ashtead residents. I have delivered actions on local issues.

I will continue to support residents on a wide range of queries including planning, youth club provision and push for investment in projects which enhance the health and wellbeing of residents.

I intend to ensure Ashtead Village retains its unique atmosphere and does not become overdeveloped by challenging unsuitable back garden development.

Council tax must be used wisely and I will ensure that Ashtead maintains its effective voice on all council matters.

Marion Bridgen, Conservative

Jennifer Smith, Green

Our councils need to reflect better the many different sectors of society. By voting Green you'll be voting for someone who will question decisions, someone who is genuinely interested in sustainable growth, someone who wants to invest in the people and businesses of Mole Valley, someone who will work to ensure there is better access to nearby jobs and affordable home ownership instead of being priced out and taking their skills elsewhere, which unfortunately happens all too often here.

Vote for me on 6th May for a fairer representative for the people of Ashtead Village.

Bookham North

Laurence Nasskau, Labour and Co-operative

I am applying to be your councillor for 3 reasons:

1. I will listen to you and use every means possible to achieve your priorities. Good basic services do not happen by accident and I will be your voice in council.

2. I know how much residents value living in this beautiful part of Surrey, and will act to prevent inappropriate development, protecting the environment for future generations.

3. Low levels of crime are a welcome fact of life in our area; but we must bear down on the crimes that occur and the circumstances that provide opportunities for criminals.

Monica Weller, Liberal Democrat

Monica Weller wholeheartedly supports MVDC's campaign against the Government's unrealistic housing targets. She opposes inappropriate Green Belt development.

Monica grew up in Richmond, Surrey, embarked on a varied career and in 2000 became a writer. Engaging sleuthing skills and determination, her first book 'Ruth Ellis My Sister's Secret Life' unveiled fresh evidence about the last woman hanged in the UK.

Monica, who's lived in Bookham 34 years, says: "Bookham is unique, bucking the trend of struggling high streets."

She believes in lifelong learning and will campaign with education and persuasion to further promote the green benefits of shopping locally.

Sarah Chambers, Conservative

John Roche, Green

After living in Mole Valley for 30 years, John appreciates what a pleasant and safe environment it is to live in. However, like much of the South East, Mole Valley faces increasing pressure on its urban and green spaces from unsympathetic housing development, Gatwick expansion and fracking.

These developments pose real threats to the health and quality of life of thousands of Mole Valley residents.

John believes that only the Green Party offers effective and coherent policies which will enable Mole Valley to continue to develop, while maintaining it as a special place to live.

Terry Moody, Reform UK

Reform UK promises change. We will rescue our struggling high streets with free parking, cutting business rates, and encouraging homes in town centres rather than greenfield sites.

Our councillors are not subject to the party whip – so free to vote on local matters without Government interference. The unrestricted amount of in-fill housing taking place all over the county places enormous pressure on roads, schools, hospitals, doctors' surgeries, etc. We must improve local facilities whilst protecting the Green Belt.

We will REFORM local government, RE-START local economies, and RE-BUILD local communities. VOTE FOR CHANGE. VOTE REFORM UK.

Bookham South

Helen Bates, Labour

I am a mother of 3 and a research scientist who has lived in Mole Valley for 22 years. My children all went to local state schools and I spent 5 years as a teacher at a nearby secondary school.

I have voted Labour all my life and became a member of the Labour Party several years ago to show my horror at the damage Tory austerity was doing to education, our NHS, social services and the environment.

I believe in a fair society with decisions based on evidence rather than ideology, good education, social support and strong local communities.

Andrew Matthews, Liberal Democrat

Andrew and his family moved to Bookham in 2010. Working as a Railway Signalling Engineer on a project basis and as a local Handyman, he volunteers as Facilities Officer at South Bookham Space community centre.

He succeeded in having lighting renewed at Grove Corner Flats, and sensors renewed on Hylands traffic lights. His latest campaigns are to improve disabled access to Bookham Station, and to increase kerbside recycling.

As a councillor, he says: "I would stand up for family carers, assist the council to improve services, protect our beautiful countryside and support our Bookham High Street shops."

James Chambers, Conservative

No bio supplied.

Molly Crook, Green

Mole Valley is a wonderful place to live so I would like to maintain the natural beauty and balance in the environment; keep our towns alive and stimulating especially after the decline caused by Covid; ensure all our citizens are housed and cared for.

I will continue to oppose fracking and Gatwick Airport extension; hold the local and county councils to account over the climate emergency; support investment in our towns' infrastructure; support policies for and investment in affordable housing; support investment in social services.

I want to ensure we have a happy, healthy community; an enviable place to live.

Dorit Moody, Reform UK

Surrey is a lovely county, having lived in Bookham since 1992. However our countryside is being destroyed by so much "in-fill" building and a lack of necessary infrastructure to keep pace with it. We are already the most densely-populated country in Europe.

We must preserve the Green Belt, and restrict building where possible to existing brownfield sites. Otherwise there will be nothing left to pass on to our children and grandchildren.

We will REFORM local government, RE-START local economies, and RE-BUILD local communities. DON'T WASTE YOUR VOTE. VOTE FOR CHANGE. VOTE REFORM UK.

Dorking North

Samuel Cockle-Hearne, Labour

I study politics and am Youth Officer for Mole Valley Labour. I was previously elected as Vice President of Oxford Brookes Students' Union, representing 18,000+ students.

This background, and work as Youth Officer, gives me great experience in government processes and being a good representative.

I have lived in Dorking for 23 years and believe Labour is the only party that will give voice to all residents, when holding the rest of the council to account. Outside politics, you will find me listening to heavy metal music, reading fiction and playing with my cats.

Chris Coghlan, Liberal Democrat

Chris was brought up in Peaslake. When Chris was eighteen, he met children in Mozambique who had lost their parents in war.

This gave Chris a passion for public service. So, he served in Iraq as a British soldier against ISIS and founded a charity, Grow Movement, which has improved the lives of over 50,000 people in Africa.

Today Chris is Finance Director of a major UK charity supporting the elderly, disabled, young people and the homeless across England.

Chris is campaigning to support local businesses, more mental health services, and to protect the Green Belt while providing affordable housing.

Mike Hebberd, Conservative

I would love to be the councillor that serves every member of the community. I want to provide more funding for the roads and highways.

Boost policing numbers, save our Green Belt and environment, support local businesses, support all residents of Dorking North no matter how big or small the job is.

I come from the prison service and Ministry of Justice background. I'm in the process of becoming a school governor to support young people in education and make sure they get positive opportunities after education. I want to see more support in mental health services supporting people in...(cut at the 100th word as it exceeded the limit).

Susan McGrath, Green

Susan has lived and worked in mental health in Surrey for over 20 years. She says: "We now have the knowledge and technology to tackle green issues for the good of all. Let's put the policies in place that make that a reality."

Dorking South

Kev Stroud, Labour and Co-operative

I am proud to be standing as the Labour and Co-operative Party candidate for Dorking South. I have lived in Dorking with my family since 2008. It is a great place to call home and I care about what happens here.

My career as a social worker has given me much insight into people's lives and the challenges they face. The pandemic has exposed inequalities but also shown the generosity to help others that exists here.

I believe we need to build back a greener and fairer society and if elected I commit to be an active and visible councillor.

Nick Wright, Liberal Democrat

Nick moved to Dorking 25 years ago, after many years living overseas, mainly in Canada and Norway. With his wife Stephanie, a local artist and potter, he raised 3 children here.

Now retired from a career as a geologist in the energy industry, Nick is a strong believer in the power of local networks to build community organisations.

He was involved in the Transition Town movement, leading the establishment and running of the Dorking Community Orchard, and is currently Chair of the local-food project "Food Float" following the death of his wife (one of the founders).

Lucy Barford, Green

I have lived in Dorking South with my family for over 10 years. I am standing for the Green Party because I believe they represent a different voice in politics, standing up for local communities and putting our environment first.

I spent several years campaigning to stop the oil drilling plans at Leith Hill and continue to oppose the oil exploration industry in Mole Valley.

As a Green councillor I would campaign for the protection of the NHS, the provision of safe affordable housing and strong, urgent action on the climate crisis.

Roger Jones, Conservative

It is paramount that our community receives the help and support it needs as we exit from the pandemic.

Now is the time to be unlocking funds raised from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) and to use it to make investment in our community centres, social clubs, play areas and schools, using local businesses and tradesmen to repair and improve our community facilities while making them more energy efficient as we work to become a carbon negative district.

A successful recovery is key to ensuring our community and our town thrives. Only in partnership can we achieve this.

Fetcham East

Kim Coote, Labour

I am pleased to be standing as candidate for Fetcham East. I have lived and worked across Surrey for many years in health and community nursing and as a charity worker with families and children.

We live in a great area, but the pandemic has shone a light on inequalities across our community. This is the time to make sure that our money is spent locally on truly affordable housing that meets the needs of everyone and gives everyone access to outdoor spaces, on transport systems that work and a thriving NHS.

Chris Millar, Liberal Democrat

Chris, a Fetcham resident since graduating from Exeter university spent her early career with BP and subsequently in a software development company she and her partner established in Leatherhead.

Combating climate change is her passion, she says: "We do this for our children and grandchildren who have inherited a world we, at best, unknowingly, have put at risk."

She believes in free health care and says: "Post-Covid we must fight to protect and maintain our NHS jewel, both locally and nationwide," and continues: "Housing development needs careful balancing to ensure that affordable housing is delivered without damaging the countryside."

Tracey Harwood, Green

My priority is ensuring the community gets the services and facilities to meet the needs of its residents. Working with the community, we can identify where to invest, upgrade existing infrastructure, and build towards a sustainable future for the community and the environment side by side.

Youth services, housing, employment and adult social care are central concerns in a Green recovery.

As your Green councillor, I will work towards less waste, reuse of resources and efficient recycling systems. With experience of working in local authorities, providing services with restricted budgets, I know where to make a difference.

Lynne Brooks, Conservative

As an existing councillor, if re-elected on the 6th May, I wish to continue to enhance Fetcham for residents and deal with the day to day queries, whether on planning, housing, waste collection and improve our community.

Most importantly, I wish to replace the Liberal Democrat Local Plan and ensure that the Green Belt is protected. Any future development can only be with local support.

Further, I'm passionate about stopping the utter waste of taxpayers' funds and I have been personally horrified by the uncontrolled spending of the Liberals. I pledge to stop the waste of council taxpayers' money.

Fetcham West

Mark Coote, Labour

I live in Leatherhead and have worked locally for 20 years in IT sales. My current job involves supplying personal safety technology to NHS trusts, housing associations and councils.

My three children have attended local schools and gone on to university. As the Fetcham West Labour candidate, I have a strong belief in local community and the environment – I wish to help local businesses grow despite the challenging economic climate, where high rents and poor infrastructure are driving businesses away.

A member of Surrey Wildlife Trust I value the local environment and wish to protect it.

Paul Kennedy, Liberal Democrat

Cllr Paul Kennedy is a former barrister, accountant and actuary, with over 30 years' professional experience working in both private and public sectors.

Paul represents Fetcham West ward on Mole Valley District Council, working closely with fellow district councillor Raj Haque and the Fetcham Residents Association. Paul is a trustee of Fetcham United Charities and a regular on the FRA's monthly litter picks.

In normal times, Paul sings with the Bookham Choral Society and plays for the Leatherhead No-Strings team in the East Surrey Badminton League. He is a cautious cyclist, and a Vice-President of Leatherhead Football Club.

Holmwoods

Christine Foster, Labour

I have lived in Dorking and surrounding villages for 30 years and my 3 children have attended Newdigate, The Weald, Powell Corderoy, The Priory and Reigate Grammar.

I have taught antenatal classes for 24 years for a charity, for which I was also an active volunteer for many years. I understand the importance of a good start for new families to give the next generation the best possible future.

I believe we need to focus resources on protecting the environment, housing, and ensuring the vulnerable and disadvantaged in society have the support and access to the services they need.

Rosemary Hobbs, Liberal Democrat

Born in Manchester, Rosemary has lived in North Holmwood for over thirty years. Her children were educated locally and she served as a governor at St John's School for several years. Rosemary worked extensively in mathematics education and as a secondary school head of department.

Rosemary is keen to maintain local services especially for the young, the vulnerable and the elderly, and volunteers with Dorking Good Neighbours and Syrian refugees.

She is committed to protecting our beautiful environment and promoting the benefits of being outdoors for physical and mental health, and leads a regular Walk for Health on Holmwood Common.

Lisa Scott-Conte, Green

Green Party candidate Lisa Scott-Conte is a mother, wife, Project Manager and allotmenter. Lisa has been a Parish Councillor for 5 years and has the development of resilient communities at the root of her Green political activism.

With 15 years project management experience, she understands the need to listen and to integrate the various moving parts to facilitate an efficient mechanism.

Housing, transport, food production and fighting oil drilling, Lisa is a high achiever who has worked hard for her community; testament to her commitment, dedication and hard work on local issues. If you want green, you must vote Green.

Leslie Maruziva, Conservative

Childhood lessons on the importance of compassion, perseverance to effect change and striving to make a difference for the benefit of all have remained instilled in me.

I am delighted to be standing as a local representative for the Holmwoods and I pledge to work tirelessly to make our beautiful neighbourhood an enjoyable place to live, work and raise families, protect our green spaces for future generations and to ensure that our community infrastructure is fit for purpose.

There is a clear choice at this election, it's time for the Holmwoods to shine and for its residents to get a (cut at the 100th word as it exceeded the limit).

Leatherhead North

Frank Pemberton, Labour and Co-operative

Mole Valley District Council has ambitious plans to Transform Leatherhead town centre. I will make it my business to ensure that local people are consulted appropriately at every stage.

If elected I would aim to hold regular Leatherhead advice surgeries and will create a forum for residents to discuss issues that affect them directly.

Housing, the environment and community safety are specific concerns of mine and I will campaign vigorously to secure affordable homes, tackle pollution and improve street lighting.

Bridget Kendrick, Liberal Democrat

Bridget lives in Leatherhead in a 3-generational household and works in marketing in the sustainable energy market.

Her disabled sister showed her the NHS's importance, saying "she is truly grateful that her sister had the care needed and that this family support gave her opportunities in a working-class environment".

A councillor since 2016, and a cabinet member since 2019, she has improved council efficiency replacing the obsolete IT system, protected council finances during the pandemic, supported the local plan to protect the Green Belt and the council's work on climate change while supporting the North Leatherhead Community Hub project.

Paul Purcell, Conservative

My wife and our three children have lived in Leatherhead North for 4 years. We live in a 1930s built semi-detached house in the centre of the ward.

All three of our children have gone to the schools in Leatherhead North and we are also in the process of moving our business to Mole Valley.

Being the only candidate that lives in this ward, I believe I will be the best person to represent you as district councillor as I strongly believe only a true resident of this ward can have its best interests at heart.

Leatherhead South

A landscape view looking towards Mickleham, near Leatherhead
A view looking towards Mickleham, near Leatherhead

Ann Clark, Labour and Co-operative

A vocal campaigner for Leatherhead, I organised the Leatherhead Carnival and Picnic on the Plaza in 2019. In 2020 Covid-19 exposed the vulnerable and I applaud all those in the NHS and those who helped the old, disabled, isolated people and the hungry.

It is important to build on that experience and continue to support the weakest. Living in the Surrey Hills we appreciate and want to protect the environment.

We have a bright future ahead if we build better and create greener homes and industries to help us enjoy happier, healthier, productive lives in a caring, kinder society.

Gareth Parsons, Liberal Democrat

Gareth, a Surrey resident for 15 years and has moved recently to Leatherhead. He has been in the recruitment industry for 20 years. This has seen him successfully operate across many different industry sectors. He currently recruits to executive and senior posts in the non-profit and voluntary sectors.

Gareth understands the importance of good quality public services, and the positive impact they can have on the lives of residents.

He feels that by combining residential within a repurposed town centre could be the answer to our shortage of affordable homes, without sacrificing our countryside and green spaces.

Tor Bailey, Green

I work as a campaigner on animal protection issues for a national NGO. Modern society needs a holistic approach that considers environmental, social, health and ethical impacts of decision-making at all levels of government.

I will focus on improving the protection and environmental management of green public spaces, promoting plant-based options in public service provision, recycling and waste management, and reducing energy waste, whether business or public sector.

I am keen to promote positive mental health in all of our communities, through preserving access to outdoor spaces, community gardening, talking cafés and ending oil exploration which threatens our local ecosystems.

Simon Moss, Conservative

Being a father to 2 preschool age children, I am focused on improving our town through community work and as such, volunteer as the Vice-Chair of the Leatherhead United Charities and am an active member of the Residents Association, joining litter picks in the local area.

Our beautiful parks, allotments and green spaces, vital to many especially during the pandemic, are under threat from the Liberal Democrat Local Plan and I am committed to protecting them from excessive development.

With regards to the town centre, I would like Leatherhead to retain its status as a quaint Surrey market town.

Westcott

A frosty morning in St John's churchyard in Westcott
A frosty morning in St John's churchyard in Westcott.

James Stringer, Labour and Co-operative

Standing as councillor in Westcott I hope to overturn the Liberal Democrat and Conservative dominance of Mole Valley.

Labour has plans for a Green New Deal, which puts the environment at the heart of everything we do. I would push for improved local bus services, better recycling solutions and a review of parking services in Dorking to encourage diversity of businesses in the town.

There should also be greater investment in green technology, such as EV charging points. The closure of Sure Start children's centres has been severely detrimental and a Labour council will seek to improve services for children.

Abhiram Magesh, Liberal Democrat

Abhiram is a 23-year-old medical student studying at QMUL (Queen Mary University London), who grew up in the home counties. While at school, he volunteered at a care home and worked part-time at a pharmacy.

During his medical degree, he is undertaking rotations in general practice and hospitals in London and the Home Counties.

He is passionate about the role of education in unlocking the aspirations of young people and guaranteeing first-rate healthcare, free at the point of use. He is a naturalized British citizen who is proud of our shared values of fair play and the rule of law.

Julian Everett, Green

I spent my late childhood in Mole Valley and now live with my wife and two sons in Dorking. I am standing as a Green candidate because I am worried about the future we are creating for our children.

I want them to enjoy the same safe drinking water, clean air, plentiful food and beautiful natural spaces that we enjoy, and to live in an open society based on our core British values of democracy, justice, truth and equality.

James Friend, Conservative

James Friend has lived in Westcott for over 25 years, serving the rural community in many leadership roles including with Surrey Hills Church of England Primary School, Westcott Neighbourhood Forum, Westcott in Bloom and Westcott Millennium Group.

Married with two children, NHS worker James has been campaigning to protect our environment for over fifteen years and is a trustee for a local homelessness charity.

Serving as district councillor since 2008, twice previously Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Well-Being and Environment, James focuses the majority of his time as a councillor on supporting local individuals and families in need.

Stuart Hunt, Social Democratic Party

I am 38 years old and married with three children. I work in the defence industry providing training facilities for law enforcement and the military to ensure the highest standards of training.

I am committed to the SDP's New Declaration core principles of Family, Community and Nation and believe that the Labour/Conservative duopoly is failing to represent the values of a great many people within the UK.

If elected, I will ensure that council resources are used effectively to support local community services and improve the quality of life for local families, the elderly, and the most vulnerable.

Susan Gilchrist, Labour

My family has lived in Ashtead for over a hundred years. I am a retired musician who has lived in Ashtead for most of my life. I am married with two adult children who attended local state schools.

I am a member of Leatherhead & District Local History Society, the Surrey Philharmonic Orchestra, Chairman of Dorking Concert goers and a volunteer driver for Ashtead Good Neighbours. If elected my priorities will be to improve social care, the condition of roads and pavements, to protect the Green Belt and to reduce fly tipping by reducing fees charged to businesses.

Colette ‘t Hart, Liberal Democrat

Since 2005, Colette ‘t Hart lives in Ashtead with her daughter who attends secondary school in the area.

With more than 20 years of experience in IT consulting, a lifetime activist for a fair society, and a community group leader to help people affected by cancer, Colette wants to use her problems solving and leadership skills to support Ashtead’s vision, and provide the village with more sustainable affordable housings, free day-care for all families, and more funding in our schools to enable our children to become better skilled, compassionate and well prepared for the future.

Izzy Tod, Green

As a young person who has lived in Ashtead since 2012, I will bring a fresh perspective to Surrey County Council. I know first-hand how passionate young people are about environmental and social justice, and as councillor for Ashtead, I will ensure that our voices are at the forefront of local decision-making.

I believe that working alongside the young people of Ashtead will enable our community to harness its potential to create long-lasting and worthwhile change.

Chris Townsend, Ashtead Independent

It's vitally important that Ashtead has an Independent voice reflecting our village without interference and constraints of party politics. Dealing with individual constituents and their concerns continues as a major focus. Priorities going forward are -

  • Continue to improve Ashtead's roads and footpaths
  • Take appropriate action to alleviate parking/congestion in Ashtead
  • Monitor school places providing Ashtead children with Ashtead schools, taking action as and when necessary
  • Support Youth Centre in providing appropriate facilities for our young people
  • Work to ensure Green Lane crossing is maintained
  • Work towards 20mph schemes around all our schools
  • Continue to support our local hospitals

Raj Haque, Liberal Democrat

Cllr Raj Haque has lived here for over 40 years and owns a popular Fetcham restaurant. Since he was first elected in 2010, Raj has worked hard for residents, both in Fetcham West ward and across Mole Valley as Chairman of the Council in 2018-19.

His proudest achievements include getting Cock Lane repaired, a 20mph zone for Fetcham’s schools, and saving Fetcham’s Molebridge surgery from closure. Raj wants to see more investment in Surrey’s crumbling roads and infrastructure, to reopen Bookham Youth Centre which was closed by Surrey County Council in 2019, and to protect our Green Belt.

I have lived in Dorking for 23 years and believe Labour is the only party that will give voice to all residents, when holding the rest of the council to account. Outside politics, you will find me listening to heavy metal music, reading fiction and playing with my cats.

Chris Crook, Green

Chris has lived in Dorking with his family for over 30 years, and is active in our community having volunteered with the police, sports clubs, Mental Health and carers organisations.

I intend to vigorously protect us from the major threats facing our local NHS/Social/Mental-Health services and green belt, and environmental threats from the oil well sites on our borders.

Gavin Musgrave, Conservative

I have lived in the Dorking Hills division of surrey since 1954. I know it, the people and our worries over schools, traffic, communications, our careers and our businesses, our weaknesses and our strengths.

If chosen I see my work as a county councillor as to listen to all and with the help of every organisation, public and private, get your views heard and what you want done.

Above all to work for local housing and jobs for local people with good schools within easy reach and all along clean safe roads and all kept safe within our precious greenbelt.

Hazel Watson, Liberal Democrat

Hazel Watson is seeking re-election having campaigned across the Dorking Hills for more than thirty years to protect our beautiful area and to ensure that everyone has the services they need to enjoy living in the Dorking Hills.

She is currently tackling antisocial behaviour, seeking to ensure that litter is cleared promptly, that obstructive parking is prevented, that the use of noisy exhausts is stopped, and that residents can walk with appropriate social distancing near their homes; promoting road safety and appropriate speed limits; and protecting the Green Belt from inappropriate development.

Dorking Rural

Helyn Clack, Conservative

I want to carry on serving the residents of Dorking Rural at Surrey County Council, I have a record of standing up for our rural villages, representing people’s views and getting the local services they want.

My pledge is to protect the greenbelt - new developments should be a local decision for local people. Tackling speeding, noise and pollution with incentives to leave the car at home.

Invest more in our roads and rights of way, and public transport. Supporting the Rural Economy by promoting local business. Providing a healthier choice for families to live and grow.

Claire Malcomson, Liberal Democrat

An active Councillor for 5 years, Claire is Environment Cabinet Member for Mole Valley. She has introduced a ground-breaking district Climate Strategy and is pushing SCC to improve theirs.

As County Councillor, Claire will champion local businesses; improvements to bus and children’s services; support for carers; and she already has a record for improving youth activities.

Claire believes local schools should be saved; is working to mitigate flooding; to stop fossil fuel expansion; and to stop the housing demands the Conservative Government is making on our Green Belt. Determined to improve road infrastructure and Broadband - Claire gets residents heard.

Lisa Scott, Green

Green Party candidate Lisa Scott-Conte is a mother, wife, Project Manager and allotmenter. Lisa has been a Parish Councillor for 5 years and has the development of resilient communities at the root of her Green political activism. With 15 years Project Management experience, she understands the need to listen and to integrate the various moving parts to facilitate an efficient mechanism.

Housing, transport, food production and fighting oil drilling, Lisa is a high achiever who has worked hard for her community; testament to her commitment, dedication and hard work on local issues. If you want green, you must vote Green.

Dorking South and the Holmwoods

Hayley Baines-Buffery, Green

I have 15 years' experience of tackling environmental issues at every scale, from engaging with big brands through my work at Bioregional, to running community gardening projects. Understanding environmental issues and social inequalities, I know we can solve them.

As a Green councillor I will make sure we take action to improve the wellbeing of both people and the planet by creating more sustainable homes that are cheap to run, warm and close to good local amenities. I live in Dorking with my husband and two young boys. Stop our cargo bike anytime to share ideas.

Stephen Cooksey, Liberal Democrat

Stephen is Leader of Mole Valley District Council, a Surrey County Councillor and with 48 years of experience is one of the Countries most experienced Councillors.

He has represented Dorking South since 1992 and Council Leader since taking control in 2019. He has represented Dorking South and the Holmwoods on Surrey CC since 2005. Stephen retired from the Open University in 2010 to become a full time Councillor.

He says “being a member of both authorities allows a greater understanding of each, in order to encourage co-operation”. Stephen is involved in many local organisations helping many to progress their objectives.

Kev Stroud, Labour and Co-operative

I am proud to be standing as the Labour and Cooperative Party candidate for these elections. I have lived in Dorking with my family since 2008. It is a great place to call home and I care about what happens here. My career as a social worker has given me much insight into people’s lives and the challenges they face.

The pandemic has exposed inequalities but also shown the generosity to help others that exists here. I believe we need to build back a greener and fairer society and if elected I commit to be an active and visible councillor.

Leatherhead and Fetcham East

Leatherhead town centre
Leatherhead town centre

Ann Clark, Labour and Co-operative

A vocal campaigner for Leatherhead, I organised the Leatherhead Carnival and Picnic on the Plaza in 2019. In 2020 Covid 19 exposed the vulnerable and I applaud all those in the NHS and those who helped the old, disabled, isolated people and the hungry. It is important to build on that experience and continue to support the weakest.

Living in the Surrey Hills we appreciate and want to protect the environment. We have a bright future ahead if we build better and create greener homes and industries to help us enjoy happier, healthier, productive lives in a caring, kinder society.

Tim Hall, Conservative

Tim Hall has dedicated much of his life to making a difference in Leatherhead and Fetcham. As a Councillor, School Governor, Trustee and Volunteer. He is working to give our communities a strong voice and sort out issues and problems. Making a difference for all our residents.

His priorities for the next four years include more action on Drainage & Flooding, Combatting Anti Social Behaviour and defending our Greenbelt and Green Spaces threatened by the Local Plan and overdevelopment

With further work on repairing roads & pavements. Supporting our Town & Village centres, Investing in better Community & Youth facilities...(cut at the 100th word as it exceeded the limit).

Jane De Silva, Liberal Democrat

Jane works as a consultant in the international development sector. In the past she has campaigned on climate change issues, including at the UN Global Climate Change negotiations, and has a strong interest in environmental issues.

Having spent seventeen years working internationally, with a fair amount of travel and living in Brazil, where she founded Project Hub, an NGO supporting disadvantaged youth with entrepreneurship training, Jane is keen to use her skills to support her own community at home and plans to focus on supporting local community welfare and environmental initiatives.
