Tax refund scam: CBI books proprietor of private company in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation, Chennai, registered a case against the proprietor of a Tamil Nadu- based private company (an approved income tax e-return intermediary) and others, including unidentified people, for cheating the income tax department to the tune of Rs 3.42 crore.
The case was registered based on a complained lodged by the I-T department. The complaint said during the financial years 14-15,15-16 and 17-18, the accused filed e-TDS correction returns on behalf of various TAN holders without their knowledge by amending the details of payment of contractors, claimed fraudulent tax refunds in the name of various other individuals and got a refund amounting to Rs 3.42 crore.
This had caused a loss to the income tax department, CBI said.
The CBI identified the main accused as K Panchatcharam, proprietor of Dhiraviam Tax Services, Ramanathapuram.
