Surge testing is set to be rolled out in an England hotspot over concerns in rising infection rates and new variants.

Bolton currently has the second highest rate in the country, only behind Hyndburn in Lancashire.

Council public health bosses in the area have previously confirmed cases of both the South African and Indian variants have been discovered in the town.

It is understand that the council has now approached the government to ask for surge testing to be used in specific parts of Bolton, reports the Manchester Evening News.

While figures from Public Health England (PHE) show the spread of the virus has been suppressed in some areas - including parts of Kearsley, Horwich, Westhoughton and Smithills - other locations are registering significant numbers of new cases.

Neighbourhoods in Heaton, Deane, Daubhill and Great Lever have seen a rise in recent instances of coronavirus, which have contributed to Bolton's increasing infection rates.

Greater Manchester officials are believed to have scheduled a meeting on Friday morning to discuss the situation.

It is also understood that surge testing will begin tomorrow, subject to government approval, although this will only target the areas where the virus is thought to be spreading quickly.

This is the highest rate in Greater Manchester, significantly above Trafford (48.9), which is second on the list.
