Federal funding announced to keep seniors connected

The pandemic has been tough on everyone, but it’s been especially hard on seniors, according to Nipissing-Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota.

Rota was joined Friday by Stéphane Lauzon, parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Seniors Deb Schulte, to announce $109,067 for six community-based projects in Nipissing-Timiskaming.

The projects will help seniors stay active, informed and socially connected in their communities.

“This has been an especially trying time for all citizens. Seniors feel isolated and disconnected. We have to do what we can to support them,” Rota said.

The funding was awarded through the New Horizons for Seniors Program’s recent call for proposals.

Centre de santé communautaire du Témiskaming will receive $25,000.

The organization will purchase more tablets, provide mobile internet and recruit new volunteers to continue the tablet-sharing program in an effort to break social isolation.

Le Centre culturel Artem will receive $24,800 to help seniors who work with the organization and provide a variety of virtual and in-person-related activities, in accordance with COVID-19 restrictions and health regulations.

Paroisse Ste-Croix will receive $25,000 to build a new and safe floor that aims to restore a sense of security for seniors for their physical and social well-being.

The Temiskaming Native Women’s Support Group will receive $24,667 to purchase tablets to provide seniors with tools to engage in various online activities and share their knowledge with youth.

Chevaliers de colomb, conseil Fatima 1398 will receive $5,000. The organization will replace old metal chairs with lighter chairs to promote volunteerism and social participation among seniors, the federal government says.

Temagami First Nation will receive $4,600 to purchase and loan out electronics so seniors can participate and be included in technology workshops and sessions.
