(WFXR) — A report released this week from the Leapfrog Group shows how hospitals rank when it comes to safety, including some hospitals in southwest and central Virginia.

The rating is based on reported errors, accidents, injuries, and infections, that altogether are the third leading cause of death in the U.S.

The report shows Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital got a grade of a “C,” performing lower than average hospitals when it comes to bed sores, as well as problems during surgery.

However, Carilion ranks well for qualified nurses and rates of infection.

LewisGale Medical Center in Salem, on the other hand, received an “A.”

Meanwhile, Centra’s Lynchburg General Hospital got a “D” grade because of higher rates of patient falls and injuries, responsiveness of hospital staff, and problems during surgery.
