Marin is in a severe drought. Annual rainfall recorded by Marin Water is about 42% of average. Reservoir storage capacity is about 53% versus an average for spring of 92%. Every drop is precious.

Here are some easy things you can do to conserve water in the garden:

• Check all outdoor faucets and hoses for leaks and repair if needed.

• Use a shutoff nozzle on all garden hoses. Marin Water customers can get them for free at Conservation@MarinWater.org.

• Water slowly and deeply. Apply water only as rapidly as the soil can absorb it.

• Skip the fertilizer for landscape plants. You don’t want to promote leafy growth when plants are under stress.

Go to the UC Marin Master Gardeners website at marinmg.ucanr.edu for more tips on managing plants during drought conditions.
