ABOUT THE PROGRAM. >> IT IS GREAT FOR STUDENTS TO GET OUT OF THE HOUSE AND LEARN ABOUT AEROSPACE AND TAKE AVIATION TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL. REPORTER: STARTING IN JUNE, STUDENTS CAN ATTEND THE STEM ACADEMY CAMPS. THEY WILL LEARN ABOUT DRONE FLYING, AUTOMATION, 3D PRINTING, AND CYBER SECURITY. >> IT IS A GREAT WAY FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN STEM OR DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE AEROSPACE INDUSTRY THAT WOULD LIKE TO GET HANDS-ON INNOVATIVE INTERACTION WITH AN INSTRUCTOR. Surely you’ve heard it from your kids at least once – “Mom, I want to be an astronaut.”A new summer camp for metro teenagers might be their first small step into the profession.“It's great for students to get out of the house, learn about aerospace and just really take aviation to a whole new level,” said Shana Mandley, Rose State College’s aerospace director. Starting in June, students can attend the Rose State College STEM Academy Camps. Kids entering seventh- through 12th grades can attend four half-day mini camps. They’ll learn about drone flying, programming cobots and automation, 3-D printing and cybersecurity.“It's a great way for students that are interested in STEM or don't know anything about the aerospace industry that would like to get hands-on innovative interaction with an instructor,” Mandley said.In July, the college will offer Rocket Discovery Camps for kids in grades six through nine. “You actually get to learn and build and design a rocket. On the last day you actually get to launch that rocket that you built,” Mandley said. Camps will have COVID-19 safety precautions in place.“We will be providing masks, hand sanitizer, we'll definitely be cleaning off the products,” she said. The deadline to register is June 1.
