Gary Neville named four Manchester United players in his Team of the Season.

While the selections of Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw and even Harry Maguire are hardly controversial, the choice of Marcus Rashford raised eyebrows.

There's no doubt that Rashford has enjoyed a fine campaign, scoring 20 goals in all competitions for the second year running, but only 10 of those strikes have come in the Premier League.

The United forward has also managed to score just twice in his last 10 league games, with fatigue and playing on through injuries starting to take their toll.

Rashford has seen himself out-scored by 13 players this season, with players such as Kelechi Iheanacho, Chris Wood and Callum Wilson all netting more.

But the omission of either Mohamed Salah or Son Heung-min, who have scored 20 and 17 times respectively, for Rashford has seen Neville's team come under question.

When explaining his decision on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, Neville admitted that Rashford's great work off the field swayed his thinking.

“I thought the season he’s had on and off the pitch," he said. "I thought when he was doing all the incredible things off the pitch, there must be a consequence of that on the pitch and he would start to falter, the injuries would start to pick up, it would be a distraction.

"But he’s kept going, he’s kept performing, he’s still there. The left winger, Mane - who has been outstanding over the last few years - Son is a brilliant player, but I went for him because of his overall contribution on and off the pitch this season.

"Maybe there’s a little bit of emotion because of what I said about the off the pitch stuff.”

Neville also explained why he chose Maguire as well as Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker.

“Sometimes you can overcomplicate it and the obvious would be staring me in the face," he added. "To be fair, Kyle has become an outstanding performer in a defensive position for Manchester City. You think of Manchester City’s defensive record, he has been more disciplined this season in how he plays and he’s become an important part of what they’re doing.

"John Stones has had an outstanding season but when he’s cuddled by Dias and Walker, it’s a big thing. The pace on one side, Dias is outstanding on the other. Harry Maguire is the outstanding centre-back other than Dias in the league.

"That’s nothing to do with it being Manchester United, but to play every single game as he’s done - he’s been reliable, he’s been consistent, he’s started to show authority. I think Manchester United, to be fair, have got a good player.

"Manchester City missed out on him a couple of years ago, if they had him and Dias together, they’d be almost unstoppable.”
