PATNA: One Prasenjit Singh, 20, allegedly murdered his girlfriend and buried her body in the remote riverine area of river Dok under Pothia police station area in Kishanganj district on May 5. The body was recovered on Sunday night.
Pothia SHO Kundan Kumar said on Tuesday that the 16-year-old girl was a native of Mirzapur and Prasenjit belonged to Bhauligacch village.
Both the villages are under Pothia police station area,” Kumar said, adding the accused was sent to jail on Monday.
He said Ranjana (name changed) had studied till class VIII and Prasenjit was a bike mechanic. Kumar said the body was recovered from a dense bamboo field located around 4.5km away from Bhauligacch around 10.30pm on Sunday.
“Prasenjit already had a girlfriend. Eight days before May 5, she had called him using Ranjana’s cellphone. When he asked about the new number, his girlfriend told him about her friend. Prasenjit started talking to Ranjana and they met a couple of times in the riverine belt. Prasenjit established sexual relations with her on the pretext of marriage,” he said.
“On May 5, Ranjana called him and they met again. She started pressurising Prasenjit to take her to his home. He refused after which she slapped him several times. Then he promised to take her home at night so that no villager spots them,” he said.
“At night, the accused changed his mind and strangled Ranjana. Prasenjit confessed that he used Ranjana’s scarf to kill her. He later buried the body there,” he said.
He said the girl’s family started searching for her from May 6 after she didn’t return home. “On May 8, they reached Prasenjit’s house. He misguided them by saying that he had kept her at Matigora in Siliguri, West Bengal. Both families went to Matigora but could not find Ranjana,” he said.
The SHO said they returned to Bhauligacch next night after which Prasenjit’s uncle slapped him several times. “He finally confessed to killing Ranjana. Police were informed and the body was recovered,” he added.
The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault.
