“The PBI has found evidence that Babul Akter was involved in the murder of Mitu,” PBI chief Banaj Kumar Majumder said at a press conference at the PBI headquarters in Dhaka on Wednesday.

“A murder case will be filed against him and he will be brought to court,” DIG Majumder added.

Mitu was hacked and shot dead near the GEC Intersection in Chattogram on the morning of Jun 5, 2016, while she was taking her son to school. It happened a few days after Babul had joined the police headquarters in Dhaka, following promotion and transfer.

After the killing of his wife, Babul himself filed a murder case against unknown suspects with the port city’s Panchlaish Police Station.

It had initially been suspected that Babul’s actions against militants led to the murder of Mitu, but the investigation took a sharp turn after her family pointed the finger at Babul.

About five years later, Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain, a former police officer, filed a new case against his son-in-law with Panchlaish Police Station in Chattogram on Wednesday. Babul and eight others stand accused in the case. Hossain has claimed Babul was involved in the murder.

DIG Majumder said Babul’s friend Saiful Haque and another person named Al Mamun had given statements to the police. “After analysing everything, we confirmed that Babul Akter was the person who planned and ordered his wife’s death.”

The PBI said at the press conference that Kamrul Sikder Musa, who was ‘directly involved’ in the killing, was a “close source” for Babul.

“Babul Akter did not provide any information about him after the murder,” the PBI chief said. “We made use of technology to confirm his involvement in the matter.”

“Musa is still at large and we are looking for him.”

Babul Akter had appeared at the PBI office in Chattogram’s Pahartoli on Tuesday and was questioned. The decorated police officer had worked as deputy commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police and had earned plaudits for his role in anti-terrorism drives.
