Infection rates drop to single figures for every Cumbria area

The latest infection rate data for South Lakeland, Carlisle, Eden, Copeland, Barrow and Allerdale

All six Cumbria districts are now recording coronavirus infection rates in the single figures.

Public Health England data for the week ending May 7 - the latest available - shows Allerdale has the lowest rate of the virus in England at 1.0 cases per 100,000 people.

Also in the bottom 10 are Copeland with a rate of 4.4 and Carlisle at 5.5.

Eden and South Lakeland make the bottom 15 with rates of 5.6 and 5.7 respectfully. Eden meanwhile is the only part of the county where rates are slowly rising.

Barrow has the highest rate in the region at 8.9 but is still far below the national average of 21.8.

The figures, for the seven days to May 7, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The list below has been calculated by the PA news agency, based on Public Health England data published yesterday (May 10) on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.

Data for the most recent four days (May 8-11) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases. The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 107 (34%) have seen a rise in rates, 196 (62%) have seen a fall and 12 are unchanged.

Erewash in Derbyshire continues to have the highest rate, with 232 new cases in the seven days to May 7 – the equivalent of 201.1 cases per 100,000 people.

This is up from 21.7 in the seven days to April 30.

Bolton in Greater Manchester has the second highest rate, up from 74.4 to 152.0, with 437 new cases.

Blackburn with Darwen in Lancashire has the third highest, up from 52.1 to 90.2, with 135 new cases.

The five areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:

Erewash (up from 21.7 to 201.1)

Bolton (74.4 to 152.0)

Blackburn with Darwen (52.1 to 90.2)

Bedford (34.6 to 68.7)

Sefton (23.9 to 52.5)
