The Forest City Film Festival’s four-day Leg Up Lab will be held over two weekends July 17-18 and 24-25 with a limit of 15 people.

“We are working to give a voice to artists in Southwestern Ontario, to raise our region’s profile in national cinema and TV content,” said Dorothy Downs, executive director and founder of the Forest City Film Festival.

Donoghue adapted her 2010 novel Room into a screenplay and the movie earned four 2016 Oscar nominations for best film, best director, best adapted screenplay and best actress, which Brie Larson won.

Her 2016 novel The Wonder was also adapted into a screenplay and filming is expected to begin later this summer in Ireland.

The workshop — designed for writers who “already possess” screenwriting skills and now want to work professionally in television and film — will feature presentations by industry professionals from Toronto and Los Angeles in nine sessions over the four days.

Five scholarships will be offered to Indigenous writers through the Canada Media Fund. The workshop is expected to be held in-person at Innovation Works at 201 King St.

“This can help grow the presence of Indigenous filmmakers in Southwestern Ontario,” Downs said.

“It is about getting to the next level, getting published, produced and sold.”

The four classes will cost $299. Visit fcff.ca/leguplab for more information and to register.
