A teenager has been arrested after police discovered a number of suspected cannabis plants when called to reports of a house fire.

A passing police patrol vehicle discovered a property fire on Vine Street in Whalley, Wigan at approximately 7.50am on Tuesday morning (May 18).

Four fire engines from Greater Manchester Fire Rescue Service (GMFRS) were quickly called to the scene.

Upon further discovery of the property, officers from GMP spotted a ‘number’ of what they believed to be cannabis plants in the loft of the property.

An 18-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis and abstraction of electricity.

A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed: “Police found a number of what are believed to be cannabis plants when they discovered a fire in Wigan.

“Officers discovered the plants in the loft of the property and an 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis and abstraction of electricity.”

Crews from North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) were in attendance and treated one person at the scene but said that no one was taken to hospital.

Greater Manchester Fire Rescue Service (GMFRS) said they were in attendance at the scene for five hours.

A GMFRS spokesperson added: “At around 7.55am on Tuesday 18 May, firefighters were called to reports of a fire at a home on Vine Street, Wigan.

“Four fire engines from Wigan, Hindley and Atherton fire stations, a turntable ladder appliance from Stretford and a command unit from Rochdale arrived quickly at the scene.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to bring the fire under control.

“Firefighters led one man to safety and colleagues from the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) assessed three people at the scene.

“GMFRS crews were in attendance for around five hours.”
