Bihar: BJP seeks immediate arrest of people who attacked Mahadalit families in Purnia village
PATNA: A team of the BJP leaders, led by its state treasurer and party’s chief whip in the Bihar legislative council Dilip Kumar Jaiswal, on Sunday visited Purnia district’s Majhuwa village where more than a dozen houses of Mahadalit community were attacked and burned down by an around 300- strong mob of peoples belonging to minority community in the night of May 19.
One member of Mahadalit community Mewalal Rai (70), a retired village chowkidar, was beaten to death during the attack by the mob which also misbehaved with women and children following a dispute over a big chunk of government land, police said.

On reaching the trouble-torn village, the BJP leaders spoke to several members of Mahadalit community and took stock of the situation prevailing in the village. “We interacted with several members of the Mahadalit community who were thrashed by the attackers on the night of May 19. The victims are frightened and they want security. We also inquired about the subsequent police action in the incident, from the villagers,” Jaiswal told TOI after returning from the village. He said, an old land dispute was reason behind the attack and murder.
Jaiswal further said, “The BJP demands immediate arrest of all accused persons, speedy trial in the case, proper security to members of the victimized families, and adequate financial assistance to the affected families from the state government.”
He said the BJP team visited the village at the directive of the party’s state president and Bettiah MP Dr Sanjay Kumar Jaiswal. The party MLA Krishna Kumar Rishi was part of the BJP team.
The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) too has expressed its concern over the violent attack on Mahadalit families and demanded “fast justice for the victimized families.”
In a statement, the VHP's national secretary general Milind Parande said, “The immeasurable havoc wrecked on the Mahadalits by the Muslim community on May 19 midnight in Majhuwa, was a replication of their Bengal experiment of brutal violent attacks committed this month. The apathy of the local police, administration and the government on these heinous incidents of attacks, beatings, looting, violence and arson is also very worrying. There is a suspicion in the minds of the people that this is happening due to pulls and pressures from the local public representatives.”
Parande also demanded that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), National Commission for Women (NCW), National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) should take suo motu cognizance of this horrific episode and initiate appropriate action in the matter directly.
